  • Should I be accredited by the Coalition of Laboratory Assessment (COLA) or CLIA for my lab?
    larry fox12-09-2017

CLIA is a federal program enforced by the states and reports directly to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). COLA is a private organization with authority by CMS to enforce CLIA regulations. BLC works with labs individually to determine which accreditation is best.

    larry fox04-10-2017

BLC does not endorse any PT company. However, American Proficiency Institute (API) and American Association of Bio Analysts (AAB) are most popular with physician office labs (POLs) and small reference labs. College of American Pathologists (CAP) specializes in large laboratories, such as reference labs and hospitals.

  • What is the difference between highly complex labs and moderately complex labs?
    larry fox04-10-2017

95% of all labs are moderately complex and include most tests such as chemistry, auto CBC and thyroids, etc.  A highly complex lab requires personnel to perform more complicated and labor-intensive tests, such as enzyme-linked immuno assay and a highly complex lab also includes toxicology and other lab-developed tests (LDTs).

    larry fox04-10-2017

In-house labs offer superior quality to outside labs because 1) specimen transport to the reference lab can lead to erroneous results and 2) large laboratories have been known to lose specimens and call the result Quantity Not Sufficient (QNS).
